Microneedling

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is the use of very small needles to repeatedly penetrate the layers of the skin in order to induce the wound healing cascade. This results in the creation of hundreds, if not thousands, of microscopic holes, or microchannels, in the dermis. The treatment stimulates collagen which makes your skin appear smoother and firmer. Microneedling is used to treat the following skin concerns:

  • Acne scarring
  • Scarring around the body
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Signs of ageing
  • The overall texture of the skin
  • Open pores
  • Melasma

The SkinPen

SkinPen by Bellus Medical is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device. At The Skyn Gym, we use the SkinPen to carry out all microneedling procedures. The SkinPen causes controlled micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s natural wound healing process, while minimising cellular damage. The result is effective remodelling of scar tissue, while keeping the overall structure of the skin intact.

There are three phases to the wound-repair process:

  • Phase I: Inflammation. Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue.
  • Phase II: Proliferation. The wound is rebuilt with new granulation cells, which are part of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.
  • Phase III: Remodelling. The wound is replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels.

Here’s what you can expect from a SkinPen treatment:

  • A Skincare Plan. During the consultation your physician may recommend a course of procedures and/or maintenance topical skincare to ensure each individual reaches their skin goal. The physician will allow time to explain the procedure as well as going through contra-indications.
  • A comfortable procedure. The physician will apply a topical numbing agent to the treatment area for around 30-40 minutes.
  • A short procedure time. The treatment will likely take about 30 minutes. This will vary depending on the treatment area.
  • A mild sensation. Most patients report feeling only the slight vibration of SkinPen during the procedure.
  • Minimal post-procedure effects. The skin will appear slightly pink to red immediately post-procedure, similar to a mild to moderate sunburn. Additionally, the most common treatment responses experienced were dryness, rough skin, tightness, redness, itching, peeling, discomfort, tenderness, and burning. These conditions resolve over time without any further complications.
  • Soothing aftercare. Your clinician will provide Skinfuse® LIFT, a clean, non-cytotoxic hydrogel used to prevent the skin from drying out post-treatment.
  • An effective post-procedure protocol. Your provider might recommend an aftercare regimen to enhance the results of the treatment.
